Mold Abatement
What is mold?
Molds are microscopic organisms found virtually everywhere, indoors, and outdoors. Mold spores are tiny, lightweight and easily detached by airflow, vacuuming, or walking on carpet. Indoors, they grow in air-conditioning ducts, carpets, pots of household plants, etc. They produce and release millions of sporessmall enough to stay airborne and threatening to invade the human respiratory system. In large quantities, molds can cause allergic symptoms similar to those caused by plant pollen.
Where does mold come from?
Remember, mold is everywhere in small doses, indoors and outdoors. But before fungi / mold can colonize and become a potential hazard, four requirements must be met: air, livable temperature, moisture, and food. Humidity and water leaks are the cause of most mold infestations.
Is all mold the same?
No. Allergenic molds are normally not dangerous in low amounts, but they can cause allergenic or asthmatic symptoms such as wheezing or runny nose. These molds can be abated safely with the assistance of gloves and a disposable particulate-removing respirator. Mycotoxic molds can cause serious health effects in humans and animals. Health effects range from short-term irritation to immunosuppression to cancer and even death. If any toxic molds are identified, it is suggested that you seek advice from an Industrial Hygienist or other indoor air quality professional. Coastal Restoration will assist you in referring a professional in this field. Pathogenic molds can cause serious health effects in persons with suppressed immune systems, those taking chemotherapy, those with HIV or autoimmunity disorders. Seek professional help when these molds are present (or if you think they are).
What should I do if I think I have mold?
Determining the amount of mold you have in your home or office requires the services of an indoor environmentalist or air quality expert. They can come to your building, test for mold, and report their findings. If clean up is required most will develop a protocol and recommend a company such as Coastal Restoration to do the cleanup. Note: Because of the misinformation in this industry, we strongly recommend that you retain an environmental expert independent of the remediation company.
Water Damage Restoration
STEP 1: Immediate Response
The importance of a timely response to any water damage is necessary to prevent progressive material damage, amplification of microorganisms and to minimize potential adverse health affects. When a flood occurs, TIME is the enemy. More time.more damage. The mitigation process is designed to lessen the effect of the loss. We will make sure the source of the water loss is stopped, the water is extracted, and personal items are removed to a secure, dry area.
STEP 2: Structural Drying
New developed, specialized drying equipment is used to dry quickly. Turbo air movers are used to cause evaporation and low grain dehumidifiers are used to remove the evaporated water from the air. Penetrating, non-penetrating moisture detectors and thermo-hygrometers are used to track moisture content in a building and aid in determining what equipment is used and for how long. Expect a 2-3 day dry time for normal circumstances. Additional time may be required for bound water situations.
STEP 3: Structural Restoration
Now that you are dried and verified, it’s time to put your building back together. Depending on your circumstances, one or more of the following procedures may be required.
- structural repairs such as sheet rock repairs, baseboard or trim replacement, painting and so on
- pad replacement and carpet re-installation
- carpet replacement
- furniture and contents replace to original location
- final steam cleaning, disinfecting, and deodorization
Air Duct Cleaning Services
Just as dust collects on your home furnishings, it lines your ductwork reducing airflow and creating a breeding ground for mold spores, bacteria, fungus, mildew and other microbes, which are then released into the home from your supply registers, impacting the health and comfort of your family. Keeping your ventilation system clean has many benefits. It can extend the life of the equipment and reduce utility bill costs. This can in turn save you money and give you cleaner air to breathe. Air Duct Cleaning is a great solution for those with dust related allergies. Call Coastal ERT today for more information on how we can help you by cleaning your air ducts.
